Caring for Your Teeth During Halloween

Halloween is a fun-filled time that should be enjoyed by all! Our dentists encourage children, teens, and even adults to dress up, trick or treat, and indulge in a little bit of their favorite candy. That being said, we want all of our patients to be cautious of their dental health throughout the month of October and consume Halloween candy in moderation.

Oral Hygiene During Halloween

Good oral hygiene should always be practiced, but even more so during Halloween. For most patients, they will probably increase their sugar consumption during the month of October, which allows for a breeding ground for bacteria. Sugar and bacteria are a bad mix because they almost always lead to tooth decay and cavities unless we take extra care of our teeth. Federici Dental recommends practicing the following to decrease your risk of cavities during Halloween:

  • Brush effectively at least twice per day. During the Halloween season, we actually suggest brushing after every meal, including after the consumption of candy.
  • Floss at least once per day. Flossing is essential during Halloween because sugar and bacteria will hide between your teeth and in the difficult places to reach.
  • Final rinse with mouthwash. After brushing and flossing, to ensure all of the sugar and bacteria have been removed, Dr. Federici suggestions rinsing with a fluoride mouthwash.

Caring for your dental health doesn’t mean you have to miss out on Halloween candy, it just means we need to pay a little bit more attention when brushing and flossing.

Schedule Your Dental Check-up for November!

To truly stay on top of your dental care, schedule your next dental check up for after Halloween, in November. That way, we can see if any small cavities are present and catch them early. Just because trick or treating might be a little different this year, doesn’t mean your dental care has to be. To schedule your next dental appointment, request a visit online or contact Federici Dental directly. We look forward to seeing you soon!
