National Atrial Fibrillation Month

At Federici Dental, we want to spread the word about Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) as it relates to Atrial Fibrillation. Because many individuals are unaware that they have obstructive sleep apnea, it’s critical to be aware of some of the signs and symptoms of OSA, and discuss any concerns regarding sleep apnea with your dentist or doctor. At Federici Dental, we specialize in sleep apnea, and as proud members of both the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine and NJ Sleep Society, we are on the cutting-edge of sleep apnea knowledge and treatment.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a chronic disease which leads to individuals stopping breathing during sleep as a result of blockage in the airways leading to the lungs. This pause in breathing can last over a minute and occurs various times throughout the sleep cycle. Since most individuals are unaware that they suffer from OSA, it’s important to be aware of some of the symptoms as well as the consequences of untreated OSA. People suffering from undiagnosed OSA will have a poor quality of sleep and find themselves fatigued, or suffering from somnolence (sleepiness) during the waking hours.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea & Atrial Fibrillation

Obstructive sleep apnea has been shown to be associated with the development of atrial fibrillation and may result in abnormally high blood pressure. Because OSA is an independent risk factor of the development of atrial fibrillation, it is critical that you consult with your dentist or doctor to ensure that you are not suffering from the disease, and are exercising proper protocol when it comes to caring for your OSA.
